Where to stay in Český Krumlov: old town or a quiet quarter?
Should you stay in Český Krumlov's historic centre or in a quiet area within walking distance? An honest comparison: parking, luggage, noise, price, kids, dogs and arriving by bus.
Short answer: stay in the historic centre if you arrive without a car, travel light and want to step straight out into the old town. Choose a quiet residential area within a 5–10 minute walk if you come by car, with children or with a dog, or if you want quiet nights. You still reach everything on foot.
Where is the best area to stay in Český Krumlov?
Český Krumlov is small. The historic centre – the Inner Town and Latrán below the castle – is a UNESCO site and a pedestrian zone. Around it are residential quarters, many of them only a few minutes’ walk from the old town. So the real choice is not “centre or far away”, but “inside the old town or just outside it”.

Cars and parking
The historic centre is closed to visitors’ cars. The public car parks around it are paid and limited, and in season they fill up. If you stay in the centre, you usually leave the car in one of them and walk in with your bags.
Luggage and cobblestones
The old town is paved with cobblestones, and many lanes are narrow and steep. Pulling a suitcase over them is hard work. Historic houses also often have narrow, steep stairs.
Night noise in season
In summer the centre stays lively until late. Restaurants, bars and people walking home can be heard in some streets. A residential quarter is noticeably quieter at night.
Price
An address in the old town is in demand, so you often pay extra for the location, especially in summer and on Advent weekends.
Families with kids
With a pushchair, cobblestones and crowds are tiring. After sightseeing, children need space to run around and rest. A garden or a pool helps more than a view of the square.
Guests with dogs
The old town is crowded in season, and cobblestones get hot in summer. A garden for morning and evening walks makes a stay with a dog much easier.
Arriving by bus
Buses from Prague stop at the main bus station (AN) and at Špičák, both outside the pedestrian zone. If you stay in the centre, the last part of the walk is over cobblestones.

Where does Hotel Garni Pod Skalkou fit?
We belong to the second group. Hotel Garni Pod Skalkou is at Pod Skalkou 536, in a quiet villa quarter above the old town.
- On foot: 5 minutes to the pedestrian zone of the historic centre, about 12 minutes to the castle.
- By bus: the main bus station (AN) and the Špičák stop are each a 5–10 minute walk.
- Parking: every room has its own free parking space in a gated courtyard.
- Pool and garden: a heated, covered outdoor pool (7.5 × 3.5 m), open from May to the end of September, and a garden with a barbecue.
- Dogs welcome, for a fee per night. Please let us know in advance.
- Rooms: 7 double rooms with breakfast and 3 apartments with kitchens.
- Booking direct: free cancellation up to 10 days before arrival, and the city tax is included in the price.
To be fair about the limits: you won’t wake up on the main square, and our two villas have stairs but no lift.

- Historic centre: no car, light luggage, a short stay, and you want the old town right outside the door.
- Quiet quarter within walking distance: you come by car, with kids or a dog, you stay longer, or you value quiet nights and a garden.
